Regrettably, time and time again we have been faced with the fact that even the most organized, steadfast emergency medical system can be overwhelmed during a simple blackout:
Think about it – we have a machine that analyzes blood samples, several others that see inside the human body. And let us not forget those that keep the patient alive during surgery or in the emergency room.
The reality is, technological dependence is destructive, both on an individual and on a societal level – and we need to reject that dependence if we want to survive. Even if we live in the era of technological innovation, even when it all works just fine, it still cannot be a replacement for a consultation with your doctor, as every modern medical device comes with its limitations.
I do not intend to force you into imagining a farfetched Hollywood doomsday scenario. Unfortunately, there is no need for that.
Latin America has never seen a crisis like Venezuela before. Would you be able to survive it? And forget politics. Just remember the aftermath of the blackout that left half of Venezuela without power. Hospitals included. There were no doctors to be found. They were stuck at home, without electricity, transport, money, food. Just like the rest of the country, who had to wait under crude circumstances, with no access to treatment, prescriptions, appointments, consultations.
What if you get sick? Ok, you tend to get stronger in this kind of situations, but what about your family? And there’s no doctor around? What do you do? Study for ten years? Not an option. Forge a doctor’s diploma? It’s kind of useless without knowledge. Kidnap a doctor? Joke aside, even you find one, they are too dependent on their modern equipment.
During such a scenario, diseases of all types will flourish, and our immunity will be compromised by starvation and inadequate nutrition. Our only chance for survival is to realize that we have a common journey towards sustainability and to make sure we can stand alone if technology fails us.
What do you think? Why not choose to be the HERO this time around? No more playing the victim.
Figure out what the people who are ahead of you are doing and replicate that in your own life! Who wants to waste time figuring out a solution to a problem that someone has already figured out? That’s against evolution.
But let me tell you how I found Dr. La Guardia’s work and how it helped me start my journey to self-sufficiency.
It took a wise book and a hero doctor to change me into what I am proud to call myself today, the hero of my realm. How does it get any better than that?
My name is Kevin Doyle. I’m a husband and a father of two beautiful kids.
I have a wife that I love. And a job that I don’t hate.
A regular Joe. Or so I felt before Dr. La Guardia’s book.
Because this book changed my life, and my family’s well being.
Several years ago, I received a quite lengthy research paper. All I knew is that it was about self-sufficiency. Being a convinced prepper, who thinks that disasters happen every day (in the entire world), I decided to give it a try.
As I am also writing survival and preparedness articles for two online magazines, while managing a small publishing house, I thought that this would bring me a fresh perspective on the subject, but I must admit that I didn’t have high expectations about it.
But then I was amazed to learn that this was written by a real doctor, who has been practicing medicine for over 30 years, specialized in Internal Medicine, Bariatrics, Geriatrics and Integrative Medicine. I was suddenly curious about what would a man with all this knowledge put together in what is now called “The Doomsday Book Of Medicine“.
Do not allow this title to catch you off-guard – there’s no doomsdayism in here. The subtitle sums it up in a very eloquent manner: “What will you do when there are no doctors or medicine?”
When taking the first step onto the surface of the moon, Neil Armstrong said: “That’s one step for men, one giant leap for mankind”.
This is also the case with this material: it’s a small step to have it, it’s a giant leap into a more prepared, self-reliant, conscious world.
After carefully reading this, I can feel confident and relaxed that I would be ok, no matter what happens. This gave me a sense of peace with myself and the world that we live in, knowing that I am prepared and that my family and I can survive – and not only survive but thrive.
Whenever I encounter a situation that I cannot handle, I always go back and refer to the book to see how it can help me get out of this fast and easy.
This is not a book that will cancel you knowing but empower you to be more confident in your capacities and abilities.
And because I believe prepping is also sharing, besides caring, here I am, paying it forward.
The Doomsday Book of Medicine is separated into 5 sections. Each section is made up of several chapters and each chapter has a clear table of contents. The information density is such that it requires this kind of organization.
THE FIRST PART:
The basics you need to know
This section offers up the most comprehensive look at preventative medicine that you are going to find in a volume of this type, focusing on the core elements that modern practitioners are just catching up with today:
THE SECOND PART:
Some essential tools
Doctor La Guardia explores health from a holistic point of view rather than the traditional “burn, cut and poison” methodology that many doctors are mocked for these days. This section offers up real-life solutions for the average person. That’s where the power lies:
THE THIRD PART:
What’s your problem
This section makes up half of the book’s content and is a full discourse on various injuries and ailments and how to deal with them. You are often given several methods for dealing with a single ailment. You have options, and that is important if you are in austere environments dealing with:
THE FOURTH PART:
Odds and Ends
This is a three chapter breakdown on a variety of medical supplies that people will want to have in a long term disaster. There is also a great conversation about Ebola and dealing with the frightening virus.
This section also features an entire chapter on the importance and methods of sterilization which is critical when you are living in a world that might be devoid of common antibiotics and full of ways to garner infection.
While The Final Part Reveals:
This incredible section is more of an appendix and a checklist than a chapter. Don’t let that fool you. It’s a well thought out and alphabetical breakdown of what you should include in your own survival medicine chest.
In this list you will find everything from tools to OTC meds and beyond. The list spans everything from A – Z and has an inclusion for each. If you are truly interested in building an effective medical supply this chapter is worth the whole price of the book!
The choice to store or not store certain items is completely up to you but you should review them all. These are not recommendations made by doomsday bloggers. Dr. La Guardia has taken his training and practice into account, as well as his own personal health, to create this list of items.
Dr. La Guardia had the mindset of a Prepper his entire life. Even as a child, he always had an “apocalyptic scenario” playing in his head, usually involving all the adults disappearing and kids inheriting the planet. The grammar school’s occasional nuclear war drill also helped.
Dr. La Guardia graduated college from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in biology and ultimately went on to attend medical school in Padua, Italy, where for eight years, got a rock-solid education that included everything from nutrition to how to build a medical clinic in the field.
After graduating, he came back and spent a year in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, at McKeesport Hospital as a surgical resident. There his education was put to good use in 110-hour weeks. He learned everything from performing “open heart surgery” to taking out an appendix. He also did an internal medicine internship at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and then finished up his internal medicine training at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts.
After his residency, Dr. La Guardia moved to Connecticut and opened up a general internal medicine practice, while working in prisons, and emergency rooms. He has been the town doctor for two different towns, an assistant state medical examiner, as well as being a consultant in a school for the mentally disabled for several years.
In Connecticut he also was finally able to buy some land and honed one of his true passions; gardening. Delving into it with his usual combination of passion and scientific curiosity, he learned the art of Permaculture and organic gardening and built himself a magnificent orchard with all types of excellent fruit. It was all done naturally without any chemical input of any kind, organically.
Dr. Ralph La Guardia has spent the last thirty years since he graduated medical school reading constantly on the topic of health and human nutrition, learning all he could on the subject which started him on a lifelong journey of alternative treatments.
At the same time, he was studying gardening techniques and how to improve plant health and yields, and the answers to these medical mysteries simultaneously emerged in this book.
I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as Dr. La Guardia enjoyed writing it for you.
“I think I should explain to you, my reader, what compelled me to write this. In retrospect, I think I have had the mindset of a Prepper my entire life.
I have spent the last decades, studying the Prepper movement. These are wonderful people, sane people who, faced with the multiplicity of today’s threats, have made the rational decision to prepare and ready themselves for any eventuality.
The American people have always been hard-working and practical people, and Preppers are the very best examples of this.
I do consider myself an optimist, yet I am not insane, wearing blinders to all of these possible threats, hoping against hope that all will be well.
It is painfully evident to me that the United States government is incapable of helping its citizens, or worse, unwilling to do so, which leaves Prepping as the only sane alternative.
But when I began to read all the different medical books on Prepping, I found some glaring problems:
That is what compelled me to write a text that is a practical medical manual for the nonmedical layman, as well as for seasoned practitioners, teaching you all the essentials needed to keep you and your family healthy in any prolonged crisis.”
“I wish that there was a six star option. I’m a dentist, and I have just enough medical knowledge to be dangerous. This marvelous book has so far exceeded my expectations that I am amazed that so much useful knowledge can be packed into one book! Hats off to Dr. La Guardia! The information in this book can be used immediately to improve your health, and expand your treatment options in many areas even if there is never a crisis event for you and your loved ones. The panorama of medical, herbal, and traditional treatments in one easy reference makes this one a MUST HAVE! for everyone interested in healthy options and preppers/survivalists in particular. Cannot recommend it more highly. If you can only buy one medical reference book, this is IT!
Absolutely THE BEST prepper medicine book!”
“This book far exceeded my expectations. It reads like a novel but can be used as a reference for everything imaginable. As an RN, I am truly in awe of the simple, everyday treatments to any ailment. It is unreal how much I loved this book! A must read and have for every library.“
“I’m impressed. As an ICU/ER RN I was not sure I would get as much out of it as I did – but WOW this is the quintessential guide to preparing for doomsday, or living off the grid, or just learning about a myriad of things helpful in healthcare and 1st aide. No matter what you hope to get from this book, you’ll get that and much much more!!! I encourage you to buy it, read it cover to cover and give it to friends and loved ones as gifts. WOW.“
“NOT JUST FOR PREPPERS! I just finished reading this amazing book! It is one of the most comprehensive guides that I have read (and I have read many). It truly is an encyclopedia of self-medical care and is over 800 pages LONG!!! He teaches the reader how to make soap, wound-care products, insecticide, sun block, toothpaste and so much more. It includes how to set up an emergency medical chest, with descriptions of everything you need to treat any medical problem that could arise. It also has a great reading list to further explore any of the subjects he writes about. Best of all, it’s easy to read and understand!!!“
“This book is an encyclopedic length reference manual of over 800 pages, including everything you need to know to treat any medical problem from routine fevers to snakebites , there is even a chapter on Ebola. The section on how to build your own medicine chest is especially helpful so you will be able to treat problems when there are no doctors or medicine available. There is a large section on nutrition and how to grow healthy plants from the soil up. It also teaches you how to make everything you will need in a survival situation…..Soap, toothpaste, sunblock….For the Preppers, it is an awesome reference! For EVERYONE…it is an awesome guide to everyday needs too. VERY INTERESTING read…Prepper or not!”
“I received this book as a gift, and I couldn’t be happier. I always knew that food played a direct role in one’s health. Let’s face it, it would be easier on you to stay healthy than it would be to try to treat an illness after the poop hits the fan. I especially like the section on how farms have been depleted of trace elements due to the use of fertilizers over the years. Dr. La Guardia goes into detail about how to replace those nutrients in your soil in order to grow fruits and vegetables with the most nutritional value. The most complete book on not just surviving, but thriving as well.“
“What a great book! It covers stuff that I wasn’t even expecting, I can’t stop reading everybody should have this book in the house and excellent price.
Thanks Dr La Guardia!!“
“This is an incredibly well-informed book which exceeds its intentions; the information is helpful for all situations, not just a post apocalyptic scenario.
Whether you are an avid boater, private pilot, camper, hunter, or outdoorsman of any kind, the knowledge embedded throughout this book will prove itself useful.
This should be a staple of anyone’s bug-out bag or home first-aid kit. It is written in such a way that is understandable to everyone, not just those in the medical profession. Definitely worth its weight — and it weighs a lot.”
“This is an excellent book on self-reliance in maintaining your body. I have written 17 books on the subjects of health that have sold over 2 million copies. One of my books, Healing Nutrients, was an effort in the direction of Dr. LaGuardia’s book.
The title of this book is somewhat self-limiting. This book could have been called: “The replacement for The US Healthcare System“, or “What to do when your doctor is not around“, or “How to take care of your body“, or “The pioneer’s book of medicine“. Read this book. Keep it nearby. Whether we have some major disruption of services or not, this book will serve you and your family well for decades.“
